About Communities In Schools
For more than 45 years, Communities In Schools has worked to surround students with the relationships, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed in school and in life. Founded in 1977, Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation’s leading evidence-based, stay-in-school organization, partnering directly with schools and communities to remove barriers that impact student success.
The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Through school-based site coordinators, CIS connects students and families to critical resources including academic support, mental health services, attendance interventions, basic needs assistance, college and career readiness, mentoring, family engagement, and community partnerships.
Today, Communities In Schools serves millions of students across the United States through a network of state and local affiliates working in schools and communities where support is needed most. Nationally, CIS supports students in K–12 schools with a focus on improving attendance, behavior, academic achievement, and graduation outcomes. Research continues to demonstrate the positive impact of the CIS model on student success and long-term outcomes.
