Performance Learning Centers
Performance Learning Centers (PLCs) are smaller learning environments for students who are at risk of dropping out. Students work at their own pace on-line. Applications, testing and interviews are required. Space is limited.
Students attending a PLC receive the following benefits:
- Offer another learning option for high school students and parents.
- Are geared toward students who are not succeeding in a traditional school setting. These students typically are not high academic achievers, are chronically late or absent from school and are at high risk of dropping out.
- Offer self-paced learning and individual help is available when needed.
- Give students an opportunity to learn using online, computer-based curriculum and project-based learning. Students develop marketable skills and must achieve at basic grade level competencies before advancing.
- Help schools increase graduation rates
- Help students prepare to succeed in college and in the workplace
- Provide students with a classroom environment that has a low student/teacher ratio and one-on-one attention when needed.
- Create a business-like learning environment that challenges students to develop personal life plans to meet specific academic and career goals.
- Provide students with an opportunity to participate in internships and service learning projects.
- Provide qualified students with an opportunity to participate in dual enrollment at a technical or community college.
- Partner with business to provide internships and with individuals from the community to serve as mentors.
- Helps businesses gain a better-trained work force
- Contribute to lower drop-out rates, which in turn have a positive economic effect on local communities.
PLCs are located on the Oakwood campus for Cobb County students, and at the Woods-Wilkins for Marietta City students.
